SPEAKING during the ANC’s Zone 13 `meeting of the cadres`, Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile called on members of the organization to be united ahead of the elective conference in December. He warned that if members were not united, like our forefathers, the ANC will lose the war on governance and get out of power. The assembly of cadres was held at Alex Sankopano on Monday and attended by ANC members from the ten wards. The outspoken leader who is from Alex, said he was glad to be home. He said he had not come home (Alex) for a long time. A hullabaloo erupted when other members came wearing ANC Tshirts bearing the names of their preferred candidates. “It is ok for comrades to campaign, but we need to differentiate between the ANC gathering and campaigning,” he warned.

“The PEC (Provincial Executive Committee) has agreed there should be unity because there’s nothing that can beat unity. The ANC can benefit if we work together,” he said. He said people must feel free to engage, to choose their preferred candidate without fighting. “Let’s not fight because of our differences. We can’t be enemies,” he said.

Mashatile encouraged ANC members who came in numbers to work together irrespective of which presidential leader they preferred. “We need to learn to accept defeat. I wanted Kgalema (Motlanthe) to rule (to be the president) but most of you wanted Zuma (president). But when Zuma won, I went to him and congratulated him.” The selection of the ANC leadership will be finalized in November, according to Mashalite. “We want the proper conference in December. Not the one where they will throw each other with chairs. We need a leader who can unite the ANC.” Mashalite said corruption was not only happening at the national level, but everywhere.

“We must do something about corruption. We must not only look at the Guptas, because we also have our own Guptas.” He said he was disappointed about the current situation within his party. “We have become an entertainment. The ANC of today is full of scandals, violence and corruption.”
