THE ONLY COMMUNITY SWIMMING POOL IN Alex is nothing but a pool of dirt collection and a home for fungus. The pool has not been in use for almost a year now; denying the community the pleasure of swimming ahead of the summer heat. Lucas Motolo, the acting manager of Aquatics in region A and E, said the pool has been leaking and needs to be fixed and the whole system needs to be changed. He said the pool has been in this state since last year in November and he has been in communication with the Johannesburg Property Company. “I have sent requests but somehow they are delaying things. They said they will be appointing a contractor and till this day I’m waiting for the contractor to be appointed,” he said. According to Dheeran Ramdhari, the assistant facilities manager at the JPC said they have been looking into the matter and they are working on it.

“We have set an appointment with the contractors, we will be meeting with them on Wednesday, from then we will do the necessary arrangements and we will take it from there” he said. Motolo explained the direness of the situation of the community pool; he verified that he understood the urgency of the matter and the implications it has on the community, However, he hopes that the JPC will keep their word, which states that by mid-December, the pool will be up and running. Residents also said that since the pool hasn’t been in operation, their children have resorted to swimming at the Jukskei River which is a great danger. They accuse the municipality for not caring for their children’s safety, and the community at large as other children have drowned at the Jukskei River.
