ALEX police have opened a murder case following the death of an unknown man at a pedestrian bridge at 20th selbourne. According to Alex police spokesperson, constable Simphiwe Mbatha a murder case was opened, (case number is outstanding). Mbatha said an unknown male in his early thirties was found over the pedestrian bridge leading to the East Bank at corner Selbourne Street and 20th Avenue. “The circumstances of his death are still unknown but mob justice is suspected because the people from the surrounding area told us that they heard noise in the early hours as if there is someone who is being chased. The body had a swollen face and showed signs of beating all over the body. The photographer was at the scene,”Mbatha said. It is alleged that the victim was one of the thugs who were terrorizing 20th Avenue, raped, shot and stole valuable items.

After 34-year-old resident was shot in his shack in an attempted robbery, the community members decided to patrol the area from 9pm to 5am. DA PRO councilor Shadrack Mkhonto said: “It is rumored that the person who was killed by the community is suspected to be the one that has been troubling residents in that area, when cases are reported to the police about crime in the area, and police investigation is a snail pace. Police need to be proactive in dealing with crime in Alexandra.”
