THE high flying Baberwa Football Club was held to a goalless draw in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe on Saturday at Alexandra Stadium. The Royals failed to pitch up on the night and had to settle for a share of the spoils against a young M Tigers team. The home team piled pressure in the second half in search for a goal but failed to convert the goal scoring opportunities. Manager Thulani Ntshingila selected the best starting line with only one change from the team that defeated defending champions, Maccabi FC on Wednesday night at Alexandra Stadium. Baberwa boasted the squad from the acquisition of talented players like Lucky Mzizi, Figo Moloi, Nkosinathi “Mano” Sibeko, Siyabulela Shai and Kagiso Senamela.

The club’s mandate this season is to finish on top of the log and go to the promotional playoffs. In the second season with the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League, Baberwa hopes to get the promotion to the National First Division through the promotional playoffs. However, the result against M Tigers was a setback to their quest. Meanwhile, Alexandra United defeated African All Stars 2-0 in the other Gauteng ABC Motsepe League on Friday night at Edenvale Sports Ground. A brace from Mpumelelo “Mario” Swartbooi was enough for the hope city giants to collect maximum points. Super Mario came from the bench to inspire United to collect three points. The hope city giants couldn’t have asked for a perfect start to the season following four back to back victories in the league and two wins in the Nedbank preliminary games. The unbeaten run continues for Alexandra United in both competitions.

Alexandra Black Aces suffered a 1-0 defeat to newly-promoted Dube Continental in the other Gauteng ABC Motsepe League match on Sunday at Nike Centre, in Soweto. Next week both Baberwa and Alexandra United shift the focus to the Nedbank Cup preliminary games on Saturday in a venue yet t o be confirmed. #thesportsavenue
