THE finals of the Sibusiso “Cosmos” Zwane schools tournament 2017 took place on Thursday at No.3 Square Sports Grounds where a total of sixteen schools from the greater Alexandra region and Joburg battled it out for the spot in boys’ football and girls’ netball. Alexandra High School defeated Minerva 1-0 to be crowned the 2017 champs of the SCZ tournament. Alexandra high schools have successfully defended the title they won in the three previous editions.

This year’s edition was well attended and the tournament has grown in leaps and bounds since inception four years ago. The more interesting thing about this year’s edition was the prizes and the addition of the girls’ category. For the third time, reigning champions, Alexandra High received two laptops and a printer to help the pupils at the school. Minerva goalkeeper, Ayanda Sithole, scooped the goalkeeper of the tournament. Individual awards included player of the tournament, top goal scorer and were presented by Orlando Pirates midfielder Mpho Makola. The 17-year-old Ayanda Sithole told Alex FM’s ‘Sports Avenue’ that there was so much talent even though many youngsters fail to make it to the professional level because of distractions like partying and nice time. He said he wanted to be different and the only player that will move overseas from Alexandra township.

Meanwhile, runners-up Minerva walked away with a Laptop for their efforts. The third runners-up, Sandtonview High School walked away with a printer. In the netball side, Barnato Park High School was crowned the champions and walked away with two laptops and a printer. The LOC and SCZ organisers we impressed how the tournament has grown over the years. Sibusiso Zwane said he will welcome anyone who is willingly to assist with anything and thanked all participating schools for the support and commitment to the tournament. #thesportsavenue.
